South West League Premier Division - Penzance 4-1 University of Bristol

Penzance first home league match saw their injury-hit side defeat University of Bristol 4-1, to retain the leadership. Missing three of the squad that won at Cullompton last week, Becki Lawrence returned from injury and Candice Britten was also called in.
After a couple of early scares, when Lindsey Williams denied a forward who was clean through, and eventually claimed the ball after a goalmouth melee, Katy Barker clipped the Bristol bar with a corner-kick. Julie Lawrence hooked just wide after a good Clare Boyd pass set up Dani Small to cross, and Barker had an effort punched clear after Small's great run. Britten volleyed Small's cross over and Barker found the side netting when Boyd sent her clear. Dawn Bateman made a vital clearance with a header and after Williams saved, Bateman cleared the danger.
On 28 minutes Katie Barker received the ball from Julie Lawrence and weaved her way through the defence to open the scoring. Just three minutes later, Bateman and Boyd combined to set up Barker, who finished powerfully.
Small was causing more problems for the visitors at the start of the second-half, her header was cleared off the line after Britten's flick-on. Small also set up Knuckey whose first-time effort was saved and then saw her chip fly across the goalmouth following a powerful run. Emma Hurworth made a strong tackle near the bye-line and Amy Hemingway did well to prevent a shot on goal. After 61 minutes, Knuckey laid the ball off for Barker to complete her hat-trick. Bristol fired right across the home goalmouth, whilst Barker's effort slipped through the keeper's legs before being cleared. Bristol pulled a goal back on 65 minutes, with a shot across the keeper but seconds later it was 4-1, as Knuckey set-up Julie Lawrence to score with a first-time strike. Britten clipped a shot just over the angle from Small's pass, Knuckey's header was saved and Barker was wide after a surging solo-run.
This Sunday, the Magpies travel to the University of Exeter for another league fixture.
