Sunday August 26th 2007: Friendly - Penzance 3-0 Bishops Lydeard
Penzance were back in action on Sunday, at home to Somerset League runners-up, Bishops Lydeard. The Magpies were frustrated by their stubborn visitors for most of the first half.
Dani Small forced a brave stop by the keeper after collecting Rose Knuckey's diagonal ball, whilst Candice Britten made a vital block with her legs in the home goal. Becky Hall, Knuckey and Small all fluffed clear chances on goal, whilst Lauren Hosking went close with a header from Dawn Bateman's cross. Hall saw two efforts go over the top, the second skimming the bar.
The breakthrough finally came after 45 minutes, Knuckey setting up Hall to score.
Lyndsey Williams almost forced a goal from a corner, as a defender sliced over her own crossbar. Amber Grose and Amy Hemingway combined to find Hall, who swept a first-time effort narrowly wide - a typical example of the tidy interplay that Penzance put on show.
The introduction of Julie Lawrence soon produced two goals, the first on 56 minutes as she found Hall who beat the keeper. Three minutes later, Lawrence slipped the ball out to Small, who finished well.
Hall had a chance on a break but was stretching too much, whilst the keeper made a double-save, from Sarah Mansfield's drive and Knuckey's follow-up. A great effort from Grose from 20 yards crashed onto the bar and Knuckey cleared the goal after Lawrence blocked a clearance. Grose had a shot on the turn well caught and a late shot over the top, as Penzance had to settle for a 3-0 win.
With pre-season games now completed, the Magpies get down to business this Sunday, when they host Launceston in the Preliminary Round of the FA Women's Cup - sponosored by E.On. Kick-off at Penlee Park is 2pm, with £75 prize money at stake.
