LATE GOAL DENIES MAGPIES VICTORY IN TITLE CLASH
Sunday February 10th 2008: South West League Premier Division - Cullompton Rangers 2-2 Penzance
Penzance drew 2-2 away to Cullompton Rangers in a crucial clash in the South West League title race, although conceding a two-goal lead, it is a result that favours the Magpies.
Lyndsey Williams made a good stop from an Emma Jones shot and Emma Hurworth, who played on with a swollen foot, was booked for a late tackle on the edge of the box. The resultant free-kick saw a header clip the top of the bar. Penzance looked the more threatening and played good passing football from defence to attack. It was this type of play that resulted in the second goal, a move from the back, through the midfield saw Sarah Mansfield cross for Rose Knuckey to meet on the half-volley, the shot squirming under her keeper and over the line.
Cullompton made changes at half-time and they swiftly brought rewards as the pacy Rachel Javan scored from an acute angle. As the hosts attacked in numbers, Penzance tried to take advantage on the counter-attack and on several occasions the back four came to Cullompton's rescue with last ditch tackles. With 85 minutes gone, Amy Hemingway was unfortunate to concede a free-kick, which was delivered well by Catherine Wright and Williams couldn't quite reach Javan's thunderous header. Both teams attacked in injury time searching for a winner with an inswinging free kick from the Magpies punched clear.
This Sunday, Penzance host Gloucester City, kick-off 2pm at Penlee Park.
