Saturday August 4th 2007: Friendly - Penzance 1-14 Fulham

Penzance took on Premier League Fulham on Saturday evening but were soon subjected to waves of attacks, as their visitors displayed bags of craft, pace and clinical finishing in a 14-1 defeat. Four goals came in the first 13 minutes, with Penzance struggling to deal with Fulham's speed and pin-point through balls. But the fourth goal was somewhat self-inflicted, as both Natasha Mills and Emily Field sliced attempted clearances, but later combined to clear further danger. The Magpies did force some first-half chances, as a lovely ball by Katie Barker almost allowed them in, Dawn Bateman tried her luck from distance and Becky Hall's header from Barker's cross brought a fine save. But the goals kept coming at the other end, including an unstoppable volley. Karley Symons made a couple of smart blocks and Emma Hurworth prevented two goals but the score still reached 9-0 by the break.

However, Penzance did enjoy spells of possession in the second-half and Hall was just pipped to a ball through the middle, whilst Claire Boyd forced a save. Symons tipped one effort over the bar but a slip-up gifted Fulham another goal. It was 12-0 after 67 minutes, with the goal of the game, a screamer from wide left into the top far corner. A defensive mix-up added to the woe but there was finally cheer for the hosts as Amber Grose struck from 30 yards with a delightful dink that beat lanky keeper, Marie Hourihan. But Fulham had the final word, despite Barker's great efforts at a goal-line clearance, as a forward followed-up to rifle in the final goal. Symons was still to be forced into a great double save, whilst Mills couldn't quite reach Boyd's through ball to find some extra consolation, with Penzance showing stamina to battle to the very end.

Two former Goonhavern players have signed for the club; defender Amy Hemmingway and forward Rose Knuckey, who hit seven goals in two games.
