PENZANCE BEATEN IN COUNTY FINAL
Wednesday April 9th 2008: Kimmins Cup - Newquay 4-0 Penzance
Penzance went down 4-0 to holders Newquay in the Cornwall Cup Final, watched by around 200 spectators at Falmouth Town FC on Wednesday evening. Consolation for the Magpies was the award of 'player of the match' to Julie Lawrence.
After Newquay had the first chance, heading a corner wide, a Lauren Hosking effort landed on the roof of the net after a pass by Sarah Mansfield. Hosking forced a corner which was wasted and within a few minutes, Newquay were suddenly 2-0 up.
With ten minutes played, Dawna Dennett worked sufficient space to fire in a low shot into the centre of the goal, beating Lyndsey Williams. Five minutes later and Dennett struck again, a powerful drive which WIlliams got behind but spilled inside her near post.
Penzance forced Newquay to concede three free-kicks around the edge of the box but none were taken advantage of. An Amber Grose effort was comfortably taken after Hosking was fouled and after a great ball from Grose, Rose Knuckey was brought down but Katie Barker's free-kick didn't trouble Sally-Anne Thompson. When Grose was fouled in a central position, Dani Small drove the ball to the far post but Hosking couldn't apply the necessary touch.
A typically timely and solid Emma Hurworth tackle forced Newquay wide, with the resulting hook shot one of a few clearing the bar. Amy Hemingway also made a vital interception on the edge of the area to keep the score to 2-0 at half-time.
A threatening surge from Sam Blake was abruptly ended by another Hurworth challenge, with Sarah Mansfield shooting over on the turn at the other end. The game was settled with another pair of goals in a fove-minute spell, the first a twice-taken 56th minute Leanne Lapham penalty. Annie Richards came off the bench to score with almost her first touch, the ball slipping under the keeper. Williams made a brave claim at the feet of a forward, likewise her opposite number, as Mansfield was ready to pull the trigger from Grose's pass.
The Magpies'efforts at a consolation were to be frustrated though, as a Barker corner was met by the head of Clare Boyd but cleared off the line and when Small connected well with a first-time drive, the keeper's reactions were equal.
