Magpies hit Argyle seconds for six
Thursday April 4th 2008: Friendly - Penzance 6-0 Plymouth Argyle Reserves
Penzance hit Plymouth Argyle seconds for six on Thursday evening at St.Blazey FC, in a friendly used as preparation for the Cornwall Cup Final. All the goals came in the last quarter, following an uneventful first-half. Becky Hall and Clare Boyd had efforts off-target and Lyndsey Williams made a brave claim at a forward's feet but the main moment of note in the first 45, was the referee being floored by his own laces in the first minute.
Whilst the Magpies defence kept Argyle's forwards quiet, they made their keeper work after the break, including spectacular saves from Rose Knuckey and Sarah Mansfield. Amber Grose headed just over from a Katie Barker corner and from a terrific Lauren Hosking cross, Knuckey's header smacked against the bar.
The deadlock was finally broken after 69 minutes, when Barker's corner came back off the near post and she curled the loose ball inside the far post. Seconds later, Amber Grose slid the ball through for Mansfield to double the lead. Barker blasted over when put through by Julie Lawrence but it was from Barker's 79th minute corner that Hosking slammed home.
Following good work by Hall, Hosking broke into the corner of the box and although the keeper got a firm hand to her shot, it dropped inside the upright in the 85th minute. Hosking was again involved in the fifth goal, receiving a pass from Grose, she fed Mansfield in the box, who shot home on the turn. Mansfield managed to turn a Hosking shot over an open goal and Barker's drive was turned round the post. Hall headed over from a corner but when Barker delivered another flag-kick, Clare Boyd headed in number six.
The Cornwall Cup clash with Newquay is on Wednesday April 9th at Falmouth Town FC, KO 7.30pm. This will be the last competitive game of the season, as the Premier Division Cup has been cancelled. With title-chasing Cheltenham suffering yet another postponement, Penzance may have to wait until the end of April to discover if they have won the league.
