Sunday September 16th 2007: FA Women's Cup 1st Qualifying Round - Penzance 8-1 Saltash United
Penzance were in FA Women's Cup action at home to Saltash United in a 1st Qualifying Round tie, where they took until the second-half to turn their domination into a significant amount of goals.
Rose Knuckey had seen her effort cleared off the line before Linda Webb opened the scoring on 11 minutes, after Amy Hemingway sent Katie Barker away down the wing. Webb was denied by a good save at the foot of the post and Amber Grose hit the side-netting, whilst at the other end, Emma Hurworth put in a great tackle in the box.
After 21 minutes, Webb pushed the ball through to Knuckey, who ran her shot in off the post to make it 2-0. Penzance then missed a whole of host of chances before the break, with some capable goalkeeping also frustrating them. Webb had a shot turned round the post but lifted a Barker pass over an open goal.
Lyndsey Williams, in the home goal, did enough to put off an Ashes forward who was clean through at the start of the second-half but took quite a knock in the process. After 52 minutes, Barker's cross was rifled into the roof of the net by Julie Lawrence, with Grose then having another disallowed for offside. Three minutes later, Barker beat the keeper to the ball and rolled in the fourth.
Knuckey's half-volley brought a fine save and Lauren Hosking's shot was blocked after a good run. Emma Pemberton slipped he ball past the advancing Williams to pull a goal back on 70 minutes. Shortly afterwards, Grose turned her marker to set up Hosking to score. Barker then ran from her own half to slot in her second on 82 minutes, and in no time Clare Boyd sent Hosking clear to make it 7-1.
Knuckey beautifully headed Barker's cross to drop inside the far post but offside was given. Boyd's 25-yarder dropped narrowly over, Hosking hit the far post after Hemingway's good run and Barker forced a corner off the keeper. In the 90th minute, Hosking completed a timely hat-trick, just before her departure to university.
