Thursday August 23rd 2007: Friendly - Saltash United 3-6 Penzance

Penzance played a friendly at Saltash United on Thursday and came away with a 6-3 win, but the margin of victory might have been substantial but for a whole series of shots straight at capable keeper, Dan Bradford.
Amber Grose had the first effort on goal, which was caught above the keeper's head. But it was Saltash who took the lead on 6 minutes, Emma Pemberton evading a sliding tackle from Candice Britten to face an open goal.
Scores were level 5 minutes after, right-back Amy Hemingway overlapping with Lauren Hosking and firing in an effort which forced an own-goal.
The Ashes failed to take their chance with a lack of marking at a corner, whilst at the other end Grose couldn't quite direct Becky Hall's cross home and Rose Knuckey had two clear opportunities, the second turned onto the post.
Grose, who had fallen awkwardly, head first on the ground, forced a corner from a fine pass by Julie Lawrence, Hosking was just wide of the top right and Hall's header dropped over the bar from Hemingway's fine cross.
Sarah Mansfield was denied by a good stop and Britten had a lucky escape, as a home strike hit the post and was gathered on the line. But the Magpies scored twice in three minutes before the break, Mansfield driving home the first, followed up by a tidy lob. The same player set up Knuckey in between times but her clipped shot narrowly cleared the bar.

After the restart, Hosking went close with a storming run and shot, before finishing from a cross by Grose on 53 minutes. Knuckey was denied after racing through the middle, Dani Small then almost set up Hall and went close herself with a shot that curled the wrong side of the post.
The goal of the game arrived on 68 minutes, Grose running at the centre of defence and hitting the roof of the net from 20 yards. Claire Boyd fired over from a similar distance but Coral Smith netted a penalty for the hosts on 72 minutes.
Another effort from Mansfield was saved and although Britten then made a good catch, possession was lost and Mandy Cox shot into an empty net to make it 3-5 on 76 minutes.
The scoring was completed with five minutes left, as Grose broke into the box and Hall met her cross with a smart header past the keeper.
